10-31-13 The Last Day of October

Thursday, October 31st
...whales were sighted off the Victoria waterfront, heading east...not sure who it was, so when whales showed up coming up the west side of the island less than 2 hours later, that was a bit curious...Victoria was not in the direction these whales were coming from!
...I saw some J Pod whales, moving slowly but not committed to going north...some of who I saw were Shachi J-19, Polaris J-28, Star J-46, Princess Angeline J-17, Moby J-44, Tahlequah J-35, Notch J-47, Mike J-26 and his mom and it looked like his two sisters...

...and then I saw Scoter K-25...evidently J and K pods had come across much quicker than thought...

...soon I was out on Maya's Westside Charters I was curious to see just who was present...we came upon a group, foraging...the J16s with mom, Slick J-16, and her three kids, one being Mike J-26...
...Scoter was foraging with them...he still has that metal in his dorsal fin and that bump certainly isn't getting any smaller...
...Lobo K-26, Cali K-34 were near them too...they were foraging...and it looked like they were successful...
...there was another group a bit farther off...
...on our way out to them we saw Deadhead K-27 and her little boy K-44, and Tika K-33 with his wackie dorsal fin...
...when we got to the other group Skagit K-13, Scoter's mom was there...and also J-34, J-22, J-38, J-39, the J14s but not J-45 (he was off with another group - really!), and J-41...what an unusual grouping...
...Capt. Jim dropped in the portable hydrophones,- wow!...were they 'talkative today!'...(compare these to what I recorded the other night - see prior post)...

...they had done a lot of foraging, some were way off in the distance...actually I did get a distant image of Spock K-20, and one of Lea K-14, both who were a mile or more away from us...and there were some farther off from them...they all were heading away from San Juan, toward Discovery and west bound...
...it looks like: bye-bye for now...
